Sorensen Construction Inc (SCI) wins 10th annual ABC Utah Safety Olympics
On Thursday September, 10 2009 nearly 50 contractors from Big-D Construction Corp, R & O Construction, Sorensen Construction Inc (SCI), and Wadman Corp gathered to compete in the 10th annual Associated Builders and Contractors of Utah Safety Olympics Competition. The event which is sponsored by a grant from the Utah Labor Commission, is held annually to raise the level of safety awareness and promote education through competition, as well as offering construction employees an afternoon of fun, and a much needed break during the busy season for contractors.
Teams competed in 4 separate competitions and prizes were awarded to top individuals in 6 different events, as well as an overall grand champion team prize. The events included: a Skid Steer competition, the backhoe competition, a rough terrain forklift challenge, and the scissor lift competition. 2 new individual events were also added for this year, a Dump Truck and a Mini-Ex competition. Each contestant was judged on time, accuracy and adherence to general safety guidelines, along with a test which gauged their overall knowledge of OSHA and safety regulations.
Team SCI was made up of James Touhuni skid steer, Jared Sved backhoe, Steve Miller scissor lift, and Travis Kunkle forklift. Individual winners included: Mike Johnson from SCI in the skid steer, Jared Pearson from R &O in the backhoe, Cory Castillo from Big-D in the forklift, Russell Clark from Wadman Corp in the scissor lift, Tim Ackerman from SCI in the dump truck, and James Touhuni from SCI in the mini-ex. ABC would like to thank all of the volunteer judges from our various member firms, as well as our safety committee for helping to plan the event. Wheeler Machinery, again graciously hosted the competition, provided lunch for all the participants, as well as providing the backhoe, mini-ex, and skid steer, Howe rentals and Sales provided the Scissor lifts, MESCO provided the forklift and SCI provided the dump truck. ABC congratulates all of the participants for making this the largest Safety Olympics to date and encourages any member firm not currently involved to field a team or send individuals to compete in 2010.
The Associated Builders and Contractors represent nearly 25,000 construction and construction related firms in 79 chapters across the United States who employ 2 million people in the industry. ABC Utah consists of nearly 200 member companies throughout Utah.
