Moreton & Company, an insurance, surety, risk management and employee benefits brokerage firm and longtime ABC Utah Member, celebrated its 100th anniversary as one of the premier insurance brokers in the country during the month of May.
The company, which started in 1910 with two employees – including founder J.B. Moreton – continues to boast impressive growth: As one of the 100 largest insurance brokers in America, today’s Moreton & Company employs more than 160 professionals in three states and places more than $500 million in annual premiums with the world’s leading insurers.
Maybe more impressively given the challenges in today’s business economy, the Utah-based Moreton & Co. (with offices in Boise and Denver, in addition to Salt Lake City) continues to be family-owned and operated, now overseen by fourth-generation company president Bill Moreton.
“The quality of our employees sets us apart," said Moreton. "Our professionals acquire an exceptional knowledge and understanding of the insurance market and they maintain a strong understanding of the needs of our customers." And they've been understanding those needs for a century now.
Specializing in providing commercial insurance, risk management, surety, personal insurance, employee benefits, financial services and retirement plans to hundreds of companies, Moreton & Company serves a diverse group of clients ranging from small businesses to large publicly-traded corporations and government organizations of all sizes.
“Our clients have come to rely on our integrity and our ability to provide relief when something goes wrong,” Bill Moreton said. “We’ve been keeping our promises for 100 years.”
Indeed, company officials point to several specific dramatic instances of the company being there when a client had misfortune. For example, in 2002, Moreton & Company was chosen to insure the 2002 Olympic Winter Games (the first time ever a local broker was chosen to provide all of the employee benefit and risk management needs for the global event). But when the first event of the 2002 Winter Olympics was postponed due to high winds, Moreton & Company stepped up and made sure the not-insignificant event cancellation fees were paid.
That was certainly one of the most high-profile examples, Bill Moreton says. But things along those lines happen all the time: “Unfortunately, buildings burn. Boats sink. Planes crash,” he said. “Accidents can happen. We’re there to help with innovative solutions when clients need us.”
That commitment is a two-way street: Indeed, Moreton & Company has been serving some of its current clients for decades.
“That’s been the Moreton way ever since the early days,” says Craig Smith, currently the company’s executive vice president. “Our client retention rate of 96 percent is the direct result of our focus on client service.”
Moreton & Company's high commitment to customer service is reflected in the longstanding relationships it maintains with clients. In some cases, the relationship spans decades. Part of the reason why? Moreton professionals focus on developing service that exceeds a client's expectations - and they have an average of 15 years experience in the insurance industry.
In 1910, Moreton & Company wrote policies for life insurance and plate glass because that's what their clients needed. As their needs became more complex, satisfied clients would ask Moreton to handle additional coverages, and through the years the agency's services expanded to include commercial insurance, risk management, surety, personal insurance, employee benefits, financial services and retirement plans. Indeed, this quality, personalized service is the key to Moreton & Company's growth and is at the very heart of the agency's success.
ABC Utah would like to congratulate Moreton and Company for reaching the 100 year anniversary milestone and we wish them great success as they embark on their 2nd century in business.
