On Thursday September 18, 2008 Sorensen Construction Inc. – SCI, took home the “Grand Champions” trophy for the Associated Builders & Contractors Safety Olympics. Over 25 individuals from Wadman Corporation, Big-D Construction, R & O Construction and Sorensen Construction Inc. competed in the 9th Annual Competition. The event is held annually in conjunction with the Utah labor Commission to raise the level of jobsite safety awareness and promote education through competition.
Teams competed in four separate competitions: Bobcat/Skid Steer competition; Backhoe Ballet; Rough Terrain Forklift Challenge and Scissor Lift Biathlon. Contestants were judged on time, accuracy and adherence to general safety guidelines.
Members of “Team SCI” 2008 Safety Olympics Grand Champions were: Mike Johnson - bobcat, Eric Carr - forklift, Tyler Rowley - backhoe, Steve Miller - scissor lift, and team Captain Craig Sorensen.
While SCI won the team title, there were also winners in the 4 individual competitions. Individual winners included: Matt Perkins, R&O Construction in the Forklift; Mike Murray, Wadman Corp. in the Bobcat; Billy Purcell, Big-D Construction, in the Backhoe; and Steve Miller, of SCI took first place in the Scissor Lift.
The event was sponsored by a grant from the Utah Labor Commission, and hosted by Wheeler Machinery who also provided a fantastic lunch. ABC would also like to thank Wheeler Machinery, Howe Rentals and Sales and MESCO for donating the equipment that was used in the different events as well as A Company for donating portable restrooms. Also ABC would like to thank Skill Staff, Summit Risk Management, The Workers Compensation Fund of Utah, and Howe Rentals and Sales for providing judges for each event.
